"Engelberg holds a really special place in my heart. The scenery here is just breathtaking and the village has bags of Swiss charm. It’s such a great choice for a short break as it’s only 2 hours from Zurich by train. The panoramic section from Lucerne to Engelberg is absolutely beautiful."

Engelberg Ski Holidays

Picture postcard Engelberg has everything you could possibly look for from a Swiss ski holiday in bucket loads. High altitude skiing on Mount Titlis, superb hospitality, a charming village centre and some of the most spectacular scenery in the Alps. A 2 hour train journey from Zurich Airport, it’s also an ideal destination for a short break. Choose Engelberg for your next ski holiday and you won’t be disappointed.

Enjoy the Slopes

With the longest snow season in Switzerland, Engelberg offers fantastic snowsure skiing all through the winter season. The highest point of the ski area sits at 3028m and if you venture from the top all the way down to the valley you’ll ski an incredible 2000m of altitude difference. Small but perfectly formed, the 82km of available slopes is more than enough to keep even the most avid skier entertained for a few days. And the world’s first revolving cable car, the Titlis Rotair, offers spectacular 360 degree views between each run!

Beginners will enjoy the dedicated beginner areas dotted throughout the ski area and with excellent tuition provided by the Swiss Ski School, you’ll be sure to make good progress.

The rest of the ski area is a paradise for good intermediate to advanced level skiers with some challenging reds and blacks to test your technique. The resort is also a haven for off-piste skiers with plenty of back country opportunities to be explored (with a guide). Much of the off-piste skiing is easily accessible and ideal for skiers looking to test out their back country skills for the first time. If this sounds like you, why not book a guide who can show you around and set you some new and exciting challenges!

The ski area is well served by free resort shuttle buses from the village centre.

Enjoy the Resort

Engelberg offers everything you’d hope for from a classic Swiss ski resort. The dramatic scenery surrounds the village and offers breathtaking views at every angle. The village itself is charming with traditional chalet style architecture and grand belle époque buildings combining perfectly to create a magical atmosphere. The pedestrianised main street is a lovely place to stroll along with a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy.

On the edge of the village the Benedictine monastery is an imposing yet picturesque building which has played a crucial role in shaping the history of this quiet village. Guided tours are available three times a week.

Where to Stay

Engelberg offers quality accommodation, ideal for both shorter and longer stays. The 4-star Hotel Bellevue Terminus has modern and stylish rooms with a fantastic bar area. For something more luxurious, the Kempinski Palace Engelberg is a stunning property with all the luxury services and facilities you’d expect from a top quality hotel.

Après-Ski in Engelberg

Engelberg isn’t renowned for any wild après-ski but there’s generally a good atmosphere around town with a strong year-round community living in the village. As you come off the slopes, Le Chalet is the best place to stop off for a drink with regular DJ sets and a buzzing atmosphere. In the village centre, the Yucatan bar and restaurant (part of the Hotel Bellevue Terminus) is a lively spot with plenty of live music and DJ sets. The bar at the Ski Lodge is also a fantastic spot with a laid-back atmosphere and like-minded skiers enjoying a well-earned après drink on the terrace with stunning views.

For late night partying the Gletscherspalte is the place to go for wild partygoers with DJs playing into the early hours. There’s also an Irish pub!

Dining in Engelberg

All visitors to Engelberg should take a trip to the Restaurant Fluhmatt during their stay. This beautiful family-run restaurant sits above the village and is accessible by taxi. It offers the most spectacular views and the quintessential Swiss chalet feel inside with local specialities cooked to perfection. For fine dining, Restaurant Cattani at the Kempinski Palace offers French inspired dining in a beautiful, elegant setting. For a really special evening out, take a taxi to Villa Hundert where you can enjoy a delicious 4 course menu paired with wine. The two Swedish owners of the restaurant prepare the menu based around locally sourced and foraged produce. For typical Swiss cuisine Restaurant Spannort in the centre of Engelberg also comes highly recommended.

Activities in Engelberg

Skiing is the number one activity for visitors to Engelberg but there are other great activities to enjoy as well. Those seeking relaxation should visit the spectacular Kempinski Palace spa which is also open to non-residents at a fee. Thrill seekers will enjoy the sledging and tubing runs and there’s also an extensive range of winter hiking trails to explore. A trip up to 3028m on the Titlis Rotair cable car is a must for non-skiers as the views from the top are spectacular. Combined with the Titlis Cliff Walk, a visit of the glacier cave and lunch at the Panorama Restaurant Titlis, it makes a perfect day out. The beautiful and historic town of Lucerne is also easily within reach for a day trip as it’s just a 40 minute train ride away – and the views are spectacular!
