Wengen Ski Holidays
The charming little village of Wengen is one of Switzerland’s classic ski resorts. Home to the infamous Lauberhorn downhill each January, this normally sleepy little resort bursts into life and becomes the epicentre of the ski racing world. However, wonderful Wengen is well worth a visit at any point in the ski season thanks to its fantastic ski area, stunning scenery, iconic mountain railways and quaint village centre. If you’re looking for the quintessential Swiss mountain experience, look no further!
Enjoy the Slopes
The village of Wengen sits in the heart of the Jungfrau ski area which offers 211km of varied pistes. With much of the skiing above 1800m, the slopes around Männlichen, Kleine Scheidegg and the Eigergletscher offer snowsure, perfectly groomed pistes for skiers of all abilities. Breathtaking views of the mighty Eiger also dominate the ski area.
An absolute must for intermediate and advanced skiers is to take on the Lauberhorn World Cup run. There’s a photo opportunity at the starting gate which gives you an insight into how the competitors must feel before launching themselves down the mountain. You’ll be utterly gobsmacked at the speed they get down the mountain.
The recent addition of the high speed Eiger Express gondola links Grindelwald beautifully with Wengen. Enjoy the 1300m ski descent from the Eigergletscher down to Grindelwald Terminal and the plush gondola will have you back at the top in just 15 minutes.
Further afield, the Mürren- Schilthorn ski area is well worth a visit. The journey involves a couple of trains and a cable car but the rewards make it all worthwhile. The Piz Gloria revolving restaurant at 2970m offers spectacular views and thanks to being the film location of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, is entirely James Bond themed. There’s some challenging and rewarding skiing from the top where you can pretend to be 007. The pretty village of Mürren is a delight and an ideal place to meet up with any non-skiers in your group.
Enjoy the Resort
Wengen feels like a hidden gem. Only accessible by train, the village is quiet and car-free and offers bags of charm. With a mixture of traditional chalet buildings and some grander Belle Époque hotels, Wengen is Switzerland at its best. The fantastic mountain rail network means that skiers and non-skiers alike can get around the mountain and enjoy the spectacular scenery. You won’t find wild après in Wengen but there’s a good live music scene and a couple of lively bars where a warm welcome awaits.
The Jungfraujoch excursion to the ‘Top of Europe’ is one of Switzerland’s most famous tourist attractions and is easily accessible from Wengen. The mountain railway whisks you up to 3454m above sea level and people travel here from all over the world to experience the spectacular panorama.

Après-Ski in Wengen
Wengen is a fairly sleepy village so you won’t find any outrageous après-ski here. However, there’s usually a good buzz in the late afternoon at the Schneebar Figeler as skiers enjoy a well-deserved beer in the sun. Crystal Bar and the Tanne Bar are both on the main street are popular drinking establishments. Hidden away is Hasenstall, the cosy, rustic, snug of the Hotel Sibelhorn which is well worth a visit. There’s a good live music scene in Wengen so keep an eye on the events noticeboard for any music nights taking place during your stay.
Dining in Wengen
There is a small selection of restaurants in Wengen but most hotels offer an excellent half board option with the majority of visitors dining in their hotel each evening. Mira’s Steakhouse, as the name suggests, specialises in meat dishes while Restaurant Eiger offers informal dining on the main street. Both the restaurants at the Hotel Regina get a mention in the Michelin guide: Jack’s Brasserie offers classic cuisine while Chez Meyer’s specialises in French dishes.
Activities in Wengen
Wengen is not just a ski resort. In fact you’ll find as many non-skiers as skiers in town.
If you’re not skiing, it’s well worth investing in a pedestrian pass during your stay. This gives access to the iconic mountain railways such as the Kleine Scheidegg which is also a great destination for meeting up for lunch with the skiers in your party. A trip on the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe railway is an absolute must and offers stunning views at 3454m.
Tobogganing is a seriously popular activity in Wengen with some of the best sledging runs anywhere in the world. The Jungfrau Eiger run is 13km long and requires some serious stamina to get you from top to bottom – not for the faint-hearted.
The ice rink in the centre of Wengen is a big draw for visitors offering curling and ice-skating opportunities.
