"If you're looking for a resort with varied skiing and a short transfer, then Alpe d'Huez is a perfect choice. After arriving in Grenoble at 9am, we were on the slopes by 1pm - you can't get much better than that!"
Alpe d'Huez Ski Holidays
The sunny modern resort of Alpe d’Huez is home to a whopping 250km of heavenly pistes, a huge choice of winter activities and phenomenal panoramas across the Ecrins National Park. A lively destination that’s full of energy, you’ll find the après-ski as varied as the skiing.
Explore the slopes
The expansive Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine ski area links with the villages of Auris, Oz en Oisans, Vaujany and Villard Reculas to create an almost infinite ski area with everything from easy greens to highly demanding off-piste skiing. There’s a real mix of terrain across the ski area, including a snow park and boardercross zone, making it a popular choice among groups of mixed abilities.
Heading up to the heady summit of Pic Blanc at 3,330m for jaw-dropping views across to Mont Blanc is a must. You can then choose from several iconic descents, including a daring back run featuring a treacherous mogul field accessed by skiing through a tunnel, and La Sarenne, the longest black run in the Alps at a whopping 16km.
Enjoy the resort
Aptly dubbed ‘l’Île au Soleil’, the large purpose-built resort of Alpe d’Huez is perched high on a sunny plateau – the ideal place to relax on a scenic terrace and drink in those staggering alpine views. The resort offers excellent slopeside convenience, easy transfers from Grenoble, and there’s a real buzz in town.
Alpe d’Huez is one of the liveliest party resorts in the French Alps, with a huge choice of bars, restaurants, live music venues and clubs, including the world-famous La Folie Douce. Make use of a great range of resort facilities which include an ice rink and cinema and don’t miss a visit to the magical sculptures at the Alpe d'Huez Ice Caves.

Après-Ski in Alpe d'Huez
With numerous bars offering live music and plenty of night clubs, there are some fantastic après-ski opportunities in Alpe d'Huez to suit everyone's tastes.
The latest, and arguably greatest addition to the Alpe d'Huez après scene, has to be the world famous, La Folie Douce. There's an enormous terrace where you can enjoy a glass of fizz from the venue's extensive champagne menu. The party starts mid afternoon with a show including live dancers and house and jazz music. Most people end up on their feet in no time.
For after dinner entertainment, check out the Underground Bar and Smithy's Tavern. You're likely to find live music here and both are open until the early hours.
Dining in Alpe d'Huez
You'll find a good range of restaurants serving traditional Savoyard dishes in Alpe d'Huez. Recommendations include La Petite Taverne in L'Eclose and L'Authentique, which is a wooden chalet-style restaurant serving a mix of traditional Savoyard and Italian dishes.
On the slopes, the Chalet du Lac Besson Restaurant is highly recommended. Enjoy stunning views from its sun terrace and traditional Savoyard specialities.
Activities in Alpe d'Huez
You'll find a range of activities available in Alpe d'Huez. There's an outdoor ice rink where you can give skating or curling a try or you can have a go at toboganning with a virtual reality mask.
The Alpe d'Huez Ice Caves at 2700m are also highly recommended. A magical grotto of glistening sculptures and fairytale figures, expert ice sculptors create an exhibition around a different theme every year. The Grotte de Glace can be found at 2700m and access is via the Grandes Rousses (DMC) cable car.
Taking the cable car to the top of the Pic Blanc is well worth a visit on a fine day even for non-skiers as the views at 3330m are unbeatable.
