About Annika
-
Having grown up in northern Germany, skiing was not the most obvious choice of sporting hobbies – my first ski trip to the ‘Worm-mountain’ in Germany’s Harz region and to Vradal in Norway didn’t exactly ignite my passion for skiing. But everything changed when I discovered the Austrian Alps as a teenager, and I have been hooked ever since.
My Ski Independence journey started in 2006 and from 2008 to 2012 I managed the Ski Groups department, which allowed me to lead many group trips to some of the most spectacular ski resorts in North America and Japan!
Interesting fact:
I did a tandem paragliding ski flight in Andermatt when the resort was still little known and hiked up the Aspen bowl many years later. Two epic boxes ticked!
What inspires you?
Watching my kids ski with sheer happiness, curiosity and enthusiasm on their faces is pure joy! I love that a ski holiday can bring all generations together – whether you are a keen skier, beginner or non-skier; most resorts cater for all ages and offer a vast range of fabulous and exciting activities such as a scenic winter walk, exhilarating tobogganing rides, ice-skating or a visit to a local swimming pool – there is something for everyone! And of course, no trip is complete without a visit to a lovely restaurant or café serving delicious local delicacies – that’s well worth a trip in its own right!
What's your favourite resort, and why?
Too many to count. Each resort has its own flair and appeal. Niseko is on the top not only for the insane amount of powder snow and amazing food, but also for its eccentricity and quirky feel – unlike anything you’ll find in North America or Europe. Aspen is a must-have-seen and must-have-skied resort. Each of the four mountains has its different character and Aspen Highlands with the famous Aspen Bowl should certainly be on anyone’s bucket list. Fernie is a gem and well worth the journey to get there. Superb skiing, snow liability and a town with a real local flair!
Engelberg for me ticks all the boxes for a cheeky short break- easy to get to by train from Zurich or Basel airport, a pretty village including a monastery with its own cheese factory! Fabulous food, breathtaking scenery, and north facing and snow sure slopes with a great vertical!
Klosters has a very special place in my heart. The village is traditional and quaint – the home run from the top of Weisfluhgipfel back down to Klosters Village is 12km; you sure will deserve the ‘Schümlipflümli’ at the Graströchni at the end.
My next trip:
Klosters is a firm favourite with my family, and we’d love to go back. I’ve not been to Italy yet so it’s on the top of my list!
